How to do things in the Community Hub. Tap a question to see the answer.

Getting started

Finding your way around
  1. 1 Tap the ☰ button in the top left of any screen.
  2. 2 The menu lists everywhere you can go. Tap anything to open it.
  3. 3 On a phone, the row of buttons floating at the bottom of the screen takes you to the six places you will use most.

The button you are currently on is filled in and coloured, so you can always tell where you are.

Changing the language
  1. 1 Tap the globe button at the top of any screen.
  2. 2 Choose English, Afrikaans, isiZulu or isiXhosa.
  3. 3 The page reloads in that language and keeps your place.

Your choice is remembered, so the hub opens in that language next time — on this phone or any other.

Joining the hub
  1. 1 Tap “Join the hub” on the home page or in the menu.
  2. 2 Give your first name, your last name, and choose a 4-number PIN.
  3. 3 Read what the hub will and will not do with your information, and tick the box if you agree.
  4. 4 That is all. There is no email address and no password to remember.

Choose a PIN you will remember but nobody could guess. Not your year of birth, and not 1234.

Signing in
  1. 1 Tap “Sign in”.
  2. 2 Type the same first name and last name you joined with.
  3. 3 Type your 4-number PIN.

If you get the PIN wrong several times in a row, the hub stops accepting tries for a few minutes. This is to stop somebody guessing their way into your account.

What is the Community Hub for?

It is a noticeboard for Ocean View that lives on your phone. Neighbours post jobs, services, events and notices; anyone can raise an emergency; and researchers working in the area can ask for people to take part. Nothing you write here goes to any other company or website.

Common questions

I forgot my PIN — what do I do?

Ask a community admin to reset it for you, in person. There is no way to do it yourself, because the hub holds no email address or phone number that could prove the person asking is really you. That is also what stops somebody else resetting yours.

Somebody else has my name. How does the hub tell us apart?

By the PIN. If two people with the same first and last name join, the PIN is the only thing that separates them, and a wrong PIN locks out both for a few minutes. If this happens to you, speak to a community admin.

Does the hub use a lot of my data?

It is built not to. Photos are made much smaller before they are sent, and they are not downloaded at all until you tap the grey box to ask for one. The text of the hub is tiny by comparison. You are told how big a photo is before you open it.

Why can I not see someone's phone number?

Because they did not add one. A phone number, a WhatsApp number and an email address are all optional, on a profile and on a post. If somebody has not given theirs, you can still reach them by replying to a post that allows replies, which starts a private conversation.

Who can see what I answered in the community survey?

Nobody — not moderators, not administrators, not researchers. Only totals are ever shown, and any total small enough to point at one person is hidden as well. Every question is optional and you can change or delete your answers at any time.

Why does it say a number is hidden on the Our community page?

Because showing it could identify somebody. If only two people in the whole hub gave a particular answer, printing “2” next to it tells anyone who knows one of them what the other one answered. When one figure is hidden, a second one is hidden with it — otherwise you could work the first out by subtracting from the total.

What happens if I close my account?

Your details are removed. You can download a copy of everything the hub holds about you first, from your account page. Posts you wrote that other people replied to are handled so that the conversation those people took part in is not deleted underneath them.

Can I use the hub without internet?

Partly. Once you have opened it, the hub's own screens work again without a connection and the photos you have already opened stay on your phone. New posts and anything you send need a connection. Storing photos on your phone needs a secure connection, which the community server does not have yet.

I found something wrong with the hub itself

Tell a community admin. This includes wording that is wrong in your language — the hub is translated, and a translation that reads badly is worth reporting, because a moderator can fix it from inside the hub.
